Kohli can previously be seen in a handful of Mike Flanagan’s previous projects, including The Haunting of Bly Manner, Midnight Mass, and Midnight Club. She is the daughter of both Roderick and Annabel Lee, his first wife. And I think she aspires so much to please her father and to make him proud. And that has distorted her ambition in a way that has caused her to lock out all other things from life. [There’s] a single-mindedness to her, and she’s put so much pressure on herself and so much importance on her success that her anxiety level has just gone through the roof."

Lumbly played a large role in the television series Alias and can also be seen in more recent projects such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, This is Us, and S.W.A.T. The Fall of the House of Usher is a 2023 Gothic Horror crime drama miniseries developed by Mike Flanagan, based loosely off an array of major works by Edgar Allan Poe, including its namesake story. It stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Carl Lumbly, Samantha Sloyan, T'Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Willa Fitzgerald, Katie Parker, Malcolm Goodwin, Michael Trucco, Henry Thomas, and Mark Hamill. Though not premiering under The Haunting title, the series is a Spiritual Sequel to Flanagan's previous The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Contemporary readers and critics interpreted the story as a somewhat sensationalized account of Poe’s supposed madness. (As a recluse, Poe often invited such accusations.) Later scholarship pursued alternative interpretations.

As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. This horror-comedy takes place when high school kids journey to find out what this entity around them is and try to find out how a teen named Harold Biddle died 30 years ago.
As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. Dominique Fishback plays Dre, a crazed fan of a famous R&B singer, in this FX's horror thriller series. Season 3 of the spin-off anthology series American Horror Stories releases on Oct. 26 on Hulu and FX. Each episode of the series focuses on a different scary story with a twist.

Consciousness, created from scanning people's social media posts and more. In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore." After Leo (Rahul Kohli) wakes up from a bender with bloodstained hands to find his boyfriend Julius’ (Daniel Jun) cat stabbed to death in their living room, he knows he’s in trouble.

We also learn, through a series of flashbacks, about how Roderick (played in younger form by Zach Gilford) rose to power within Fortunato, egged on by his duplicitous and cold sister, Madeline (played by Mary McDonnell in the present and Willa Fitzgerald in flashbacks). Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way. What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations.
Now, a mysterious woman (Gugino) begins to pick Roderick's dysfunctional heirs off one by one. That left only two Ushers—the ones who entered the world together, and had to go out as well. While Madeline tried to skirt the system by having Roderick overdose on his own Fortunato meds, Verna wasn't letting that happen. And so Roderick invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where their mother once died (and rose again, only to strangle a man to death before finally dying herself), to share a drink. This death comes as a major twist; throughout the conversation between Roderick and Dupin, he notes that he's not answering texts he's receiving from his granddaughter. As you may remember, Madeline's plan was to turn Fortunato into a tech company, and one of her major projects was A.I.
But now she only sees poverty in Roderick, as he starved their children of love. After she turns her back on him, we learn that she died by suicide. Through the years, the siblings convinced themselves that this simply couldn't have actually been real. They shared a traumatic event at a formative time in life, and had been drinking quite a bit—their meeting with Verna must have been a shared delusion, and for years, they wrote it off as such.
Using Griswold as a fall guy to begin Roderick’s takeover, the twins drugged him on the night of the company holiday party. When Griswold woke, he found that they’re sealing him behind a brick wall in the basement of the new Fortunato building he’s constructing. His cries for help were useless, because the holidays meant no one would be back in the building for days. But he wouldn’t last the night anyway — Madeline poisoned him with cyanide.
We heard this banging throughout the series, and much like Momma Usher when Roderick and Madeline were children, Madeline was not quite as dead as she initially seemed. She burst above ground, strangling Roderick as a surrounding storm began to take their childhood home down to the ground with them, just as Dupin got out of the house in time. “There is a lot about my job that I love, but there are moments like these that bring me no joy,” Verna tells her in her bedroom after a conversation that found Lenore telling Roderick that it wasn't too late to use Fortunato and the family's largesse for good. Keep in mind that Lenore still had this pureness of mind after seeing her mother burnt within in inch of her life by acid (thanks to Prospero's foolish orgy party) and then tortured by her father, who himself had just been brutally killed in a ridiculous freak accident. Even before the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, it's abundantly clear that Verna (Carla Gugino) is no mere human being. But Verna (which, if you notice, is an anagram of RAVEN) represents some kind of devil or adjacent otherworldly force, a harbinger of death who exists only to tempt and test the ethics and morality of those who need testing.

Frederick Usher is the eldest of the Usher family and the natural heir to his father’s company. Compared to his other siblings, he is the least equipped to take over Fortunato. Fred suffers from neuroses and harbors intense jealousy and an ever-present insecurity.
Whether the reader is trapped by the house or by its inhabitants is unclear. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family. On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims.
